Last Tuesday night Nick, Sarah and I made a trip to Birmingham to see a band from Seattle perform. The support act, Styrofoam, was from Antwerp, but the main act was obviously what we went to see. Deathcab for Cutie get their name from a 1960s British Bonzo Dog Doo-dah Band song, which illustrates the fact that, despite being a rather nurdy, morbid band, they have a sense of humour. Unfortunately, the bouncers took away my camera but you can look them up if you wish. It was a brilliant gig. I was the only old geezer there who sang along to all the songs and bopped about. Others on the balcony seemed more concerned to be cool, and obviously didn't know the words. I had a great time.
Birmingham has changed a lot since I was last there. It was always a bit of a hotch-potch because the Luftwaffe knocked hell out of it in the 40's. The entire Bull-Ring area has been re-designed with a new shopping mall, seemingly covered in bubble-wrap. It's quite exciting, but also confusing. The singer from Seattle remarked that he thought Birmingham was a beautiful city and the audience fell about laughing, thinking that he was joking!
I'd like to go back and see k.d.lang there on August 1st, but tickets are tres, tres cher and very rare. Deathcab tickets only cost £16 which explains why so many in the audience were just going for a cheap night out and had no idea what a good gig they were at. They probably still don't.
