James, Jo, Jake and Thea came up to stay this week. Their car isn't fixed yet, so it was a bit of a mammoth effort. They made the ultimate sacrifice; caring for Dan while we went off to celebrate our Silver Wedding on an overnight stay in Norfolk.
We had a wonderful time, visiting Cley and Blakeney Marshes Nature Reserves for some first class bird-watching and some real peace and quiet. We stayed in Blakeney House and dined at the local seafood place, which is called "The Moorings" . I fell in love with Blakeney which, like Cley, used to be an important port before the estuary silted up. It is full of interesting nooks and crannies, posh houses and quaint cottages in very narrow streets. Blakeney is one of the finest examples of a Norfolk village, build from brick and flint, and you can still sail out through the harbour at high water, to see the seals and birds on the point or head off into the North Sea or The Wash. It doesn't have a beach, but there are miles of salt marshes and grazing marshes, full of birds and criss-crossed by public paths. Most of the land is in the hands of conservation charities.
We arrived home on Thursday evening to find that Dan had been pretty good. However, his bed had collapsed at 1 am, due to being inhabited by Dan and a pile of other people at once. This event traumatised him so much, he felt like smashing something else, which turned out to be his telly. James and I soon had the bed fixed, thanks to my new electric drill and we borrowed Nick's old TV so things were soon back to normal. Dan had more or less been awake since the bed incident so was asleep soon after nine.
We owe the Bath Stevenson's a treat for their help. It was really worth it, thanks.
