Grandson

Jake is my grandson. He's a bit weird, quite a head-case really, and I love him to bits. He reads a lot, looks like he's wearing a wig (he isn't) and puts on a Somerset accent; but he's a ball of fun and mischief really. He's very musical and a bit of a thespian (look it up! It's not an insult.)

We went down to Bath on Friday, to see Jake in a performance of the "Hot Mikado"; a punk version of Gilbert and Sullivan. It was held on the edge of the Cotswold Hills, high above Bath, in a smart, cosy theatre, housed in Kingswood Boarding School.

We had a fabulous evening, and the show was great. They had previously made a very adventurous attempt at Titanic, which was received with great acclaim from the local critics. In this show the sets were less adventurous, but the musical requirement on the young troop of performers was pretty demanding. It was very colourful and entertaining show. We loved it.

Then, on Saturday, on our way home, we went to Laycock Abbey in Wiltshire. It's a classic Norman settlement, made with local stone surrounding the Abbey, its tithe barns and the village nucleus, The Medieval field system, on the banks of the Avon, remain intact. The whole shebang has been bought by the National Trust and is a bit touristy to say the least, but still well worth a visit, especially if you go on a decent walk.

We went on quite a decent walk, during which we got thoroughly plastered in mud. Dan lost a shoe but wandered gamely on, in a sodden sock. 'Great stuff. We arrived back at the car park at dusk and drove home in the dark. Dan slept like a log, which is not at all usual.

It's really nice to see our extended family, and to get nick home for a week-end afterwards. What a treat!
