Bury St Edmunds

I really didn't know what to expect from a Christmas Fair; perhaps a lot of stalls selling candles and cards? Well, the Bury Christmas Market was much better than that. Actually, it was brilliant!

We went on the Saturday, which I guess is normally market day anyway. Because we didn't get there until lunchtime, parking was a problem, so I let the family out and drove around looking for a space. We have a blue badge because of my son Dan's special needs, so that helped. The town was incredibly busy, but everyone seemed in festive mood and we didn't meet any grumpy people at all.

Most of the streets had stalls, street entertainers and musicians, but the best bit was down by the Cathedral and the Abbey Gardens where there was a large stage with all sorts of acts and a huddle of stalls selling French cheese, Italian sausages, Dutch pancakes, Russian icons and much more. All of the stall-holders were in Victorian costumes and some of them were real characters. Business was brisk.

We really needed more than a day just to see all the stalls, never mind the palaver of actually buying anything. Having Dan along with us kept us busy too, despite having two of his carers along to help: 'Too many distractions. He spent a long time watching a magician so we did get some shopping done. I'm rather proud of the fact that we only spent £8 this year, but next year we will make sure we get time to shop. We could stock up on special ingredients and tasty deli bites, or perhaps I will buy the Hells Angels helmet with horns for driving my tractor.

The event must have taken months to organise. The council, traders and town's folk in Bury St Edmund's are to be congratulated on organising one of the best three-day markets in Europe. Thank-you one and all.
