"Graduand" is a new word for me, but I guess you all know that it means, "one who is about to graduate." Anyway, the deal is that you are a graduand until the Dean hands you a scroll, or shakes your hand, or otherwise tells you that you are now a graduate and that you can head for the Job Centre when you like.
Nick's graduation day was held at Hereford Cathedral, which is sensibly located in the middle of Hereford. The town itself is placed between England and Wales and this adds a few complications: The graduands on the left (north) side of the cathedral graduate from the University of Wales, while those on the other side get a degree from the University of Gloucester. It matters not a lot, but you have to wear different kit for each university.
The theme of the speeches seemed to be "I try to be optimistic, but..." The message is, "Put yourself out there, or starve". Famous people have given their advice to graduands. Isaac Asimov tops the list by saying repeatedly "Always use sun cream". I tried, but my pasta still came out soggy.
Despite everything, our son Nick (who takes after his dad, obviously) graduated with First Degree Honours! (LOUD CHEERS, OFF)
WELL DONE NICK.
