Beaver Lake NH

There are still beavers living at Beaver Lake but you don't see them much as they keep to the shallow overgrown section that we call Pickerel Pond.

The main lake is completely surrounded by cabins that range from simple, two room affairs to rustic mansions, all with their own dock and an array of boats, canoes, inflatable toys, barbeques, motorcycles and other modes of transport. However there is a public boat ramp and a small swimming beach so you can get access even if you don't have friend with a cabin.

Our friends, the Reddels, have one of the simpler cabins but it easily accommodates 5 or 6 people in style. Our greatest pleasures were enjoying the wildlife right there at the cabin and exploring the water in kayaks or in my old favourite, the vintage aluminium fishing canoe.

It has been over ten years since I visited the cabin by the lake, but it's almost exactly the same as it was. The lake looks bigger somehow and the trees have all grown. There are more lakeside properties now and some of the old ones have been extended or replaced with bigger ones, but esssentially it's an idylic place to spend a few days. It's rural, with hints of wilderness but the shops in Derry, Londonderry and Manchester are not far away. Many of the folks round here commute to Boston, Massachusets for work. It takes an hour if you set off really early; three if you get caught in traffic.

You can see some pictures here.
