On Saturday I had my annual treat; dressing up as a Native American chief, building wig-wams and playing with bows and arrows. It all has an educational purpose, of course, but its mostly fun.
When I was a kid I was fascinated by Cowboys and Davy Crockett. I won a fancy dress show in 1953, in celebrating the coronation of the Queen. dressed as cowboy. My Mum had even made chaps out of sacking and dyed them for me to wear. Through Saturday morning movie shows, especially Walt Disney's World of Nature, I became familiar with American wildlife and birds. I had all the books on wildlife and an excellent Buffalo Bill Annual. Then I read a lot of the classics like Thom Sawyer. On TV, westerns were on almost every day. I always wanted to wear buckskins, have a canoe and a horse. I read about Grey Owl and wanted to marry a squaw like he did. My brother had the same idea and we both got mail order brides from Sears Roebuck. We're both still fascinated.
