Despite all the economic doom and gloom, the Stevensons are back to normal. That is, Nick went back to Hereford on Sunday, Dan is going to school every day and we are slowly clearing away the debris from the holidays.
My job on Saturday was to put the tree, the lights and all things relating to Christmas into the loft. I took one look and decided to have a throw out first. Then I decided to finish flooring the entire loft to improve the insulation and make things easier to find. Hopefully this will make it less likely for me to fall through the bedroom ceiling! Anyway, it's done.
Despite all traces of Christmas being removed, Dan got up this morning, convinced that we were hiding presents from him. He looked in all the usual places and really could not be fobbed off. In the end Hanna got him to crouch on the floor near the fireplace and open a big pile of imaginary presents. It seems to work, so perhaps we should try this approach next December.
Nick worked hard on an assignment about Henry Darger who was a recluse, living in Chicago until 1972. I believe he is much better known in the USA than here. I found it fascinating. Typiclally for "Nick the diplomat", many opposing views on Darger were examined but we were left to decide for ourselves. Was it right to separate Darger's art from his writing? Like Tolkien, he created and wrote about a detailed and vivid imaginary world, in book form, producing the illustrations himself. However, it was Darger's artwork that caused a stir, not the book. Did Darger know "the facts of life" such as the anatomical differences between boys and girls? Indeed, was Darger a serial killer or a paedophile? Nick's not saying. Check the man out for yourselves.
